Step 1 of 2

Burkittsville as we know it

Burkittsville is the small village at the foot of South Mountain, west of Jefferson: one main street of brick and stone houses from the 1800s, the churches, and then the farms of Pleasant Valley running up toward the gap at Gathland. There are only a few hundred people here, and we’re in Burkittsville on the days we clean Middletown, Jefferson and Brunswick, so it’s part of a regular run and not a special trip.

Almost every house in the village is old, and old houses clean on their own terms. Plaster walls and deep windowsills hold dust, the original floors want a flat microfiber mop that’s damp, not wet, and the first visit is almost always a deep clean because of the detail. We don’t use caustic chemicals, acids or alkalis on anything, so the old finishes are safe. A typical first clean of a three-bedroom home runs about three hours for a team of two; after that, about an hour or two per visit, depending on the home.

We clean homes all over Burkittsville (ZIP 21718), including near the Burkittsville Historic District, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Resurrection Reformed Church and the Crampton’s Gap Historic District.

What we do in Burkittsville

Recurring regular cleaning, every other week or monthly for most Burkittsville homes. Deep cleaning as the first visit to an old house and before the holidays. Move-in and move-out cleaning. House cleaning once. On-call cleaning, where you’re not on a schedule and you call us when you want a visit, some people every month and some twice a year. All of it with green cleaning products made in our office from salt, water and electricity, which means a healthier home for you.

We also clean for second homes in Burkittsville.

A little history about Burkittsville

Crampton’s Gap and a village of hospitals

On September 14, 1862, three days before Antietam, Union troops attacked Confederate defenders at Crampton’s Gap, on the mountain above Burkittsville. Afterward the village’s churches, schoolhouse, barns and homes became hospitals for hundreds of wounded soldiers from both sides. The last of them closed in early 1863. From Harley’s Post Office to Burkittsville

Burkittsville’s first post office opened in 1824 as Harley’s Post Office, with storekeeper Joshua Harley as postmaster. In 1829 neighboring landowner Henry Burkitt had his land surveyed and the town platted, and the village came to bear his name. Source: Town of Burkittsville, South Mountain Heritage Society

Gath’s arch for war correspondents

In 1884 Civil War correspondent George Alfred Townsend, who wrote as “Gath,” bought land at Crampton’s Gap and built an estate he called Gapland. In 1895 and 1896 he built a 50-foot memorial arch there to war correspondents. It stands in Gathland State Park, about a mile west of the village. Source: Maryland DNR
