Step 1 of 2

Thurmont as we know it

Thurmont is the town at the foot of Catoctin Mountain: the older houses on Main Street, Water Street and the streets around the square, the mid-century ranchers and the newer subdivisions on the east side toward Route 15, and the houses up the mountain roads toward Cunningham Falls and the park, where the driveways are gravel and the trees drop on everything. Out past the town are the orchards, the farms and the homes along Route 550 toward Sabillasville and Route 77 toward Rocky Ridge.

The mountain houses bring in more dust and more leaves than a house in town, and a wood stove adds its own. The high dusting and the floors take longer there, and we plan for it. A typical first clean of a three-bedroom home runs about three hours for a team of two; after that, about an hour or two per visit, depending on the home.

Thurmont is the top of our regular run, so the office tends to schedule the town on the same days and asks for a little flexibility on the window.

Around Thurmont (ZIP 21788), we clean homes in Hammaker Hills, Pleasant Acres, Jermae Estates, Fair Oaks and Catoctin Highlands. That includes homes near Catoctin Mountain Park, Cunningham Falls State Park, Thurmont Community Park and Catoctin High School.

What we do in Thurmont

Recurring regular cleaning, weekly, every other week or monthly. Deep cleaning in spring after the stove season and before the holidays. Move-in and move-out cleaning. House cleaning once. Cleaning for second homes, for the people who have a mountain place and aren’t there every week. On-call cleaning, where you’re not on a schedule and you call us when you want a visit, some people every month and some twice a year. All of it with green cleaning products made in our office from salt, water and electricity, which means a healthier home for you.

A little history about Thurmont

Mechanicstown becomes Thurmont

Thurmont was incorporated as Mechanicstown in 1831 and reincorporated as Thurmont in 1894. According to the local paper’s history, residents voted for the new name after the Western Maryland Railway arrived in 1871, because Mechanicstown kept getting mixed up with towns like Mechanicsburg and Mechanicsville. Catoctin Iron Furnace

Catoctin Iron Furnace, just south of Thurmont, was started by Thomas Johnson, later Maryland’s first governor, and three of his brothers. It made pig iron and, according to the state, cannonballs for George Washington’s army, which the National Park Service also reports. It ran until February 1903. Skilled enslaved workers labored at the furnace, and in 2026 their cemetery became part of Cunningham Falls State Park. Source: National Park Service, Maryland DNR

The presidential retreat in the hills

On April 22, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt visited Camp Hi-Catoctin, a camp in the Catoctin Mountains near Thurmont. He chose it as a cooler retreat close to Washington and named it Shangri-La. In 1953 President Eisenhower renamed it Camp David, after his grandson. Source: National Park Service
