Sabillasville as we know it

Sabillasville is up on the mountain northwest of Thurmont, almost at the Pennsylvania line: the village along Route 550, the houses up the gravel roads on either side of it, and the cabins and weekend places in the woods toward Cunningham Falls and the state line. It’s the top of the county in every sense, and most cleaning companies don’t come. We do, on the days we’re in Thurmont, Emmitsburg and Rocky Ridge, and we ask for flexibility on the window because the drive is the longest on our list.

Mountain houses are their own job. Ash from a wood stove settles on everything in winter, the gravel drive comes in on every shoe, and the windows face the woods and show it. We high-dust the beams and the fans, start at the entries, and mop with a damp microfiber mop so the wood floors are safe. A typical first clean of a three-bedroom home runs about three hours for a team of two; after that, about an hour or two per visit, depending on the home.

Named for Savilla Zullinger

Sabillasville is named for a woman. Surveyor Andrew Smith laid out the village on November 4, 1813, for landowner Peter Zullinger, and it was named for Zullinger’s wife, Savilla. In its early years it was often called Zullinger’s Town. Source: Emmitsburg Area Historical Society

Maryland’s first state tuberculosis sanatorium

In April 1906 Maryland approved money for a state tuberculosis sanatorium at Sabillasville, the first state-sponsored institution of its kind in Maryland.
