Emmitsburg is the old town on Main Street, brick and stone houses from the 1800s with the deep windowsills and the plaster walls, and the newer streets around it; Mount St. Mary’s University and the seminary on the hill south of town; and the farms and the mountain roads in every direction, toward Thurmont, Taneytown and the state line. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint

In 1809 Elizabeth Ann Seton moved her school to Emmitsburg and founded the Sisters of Charity, the first American religious order for women. She lived there until her death in 1821. On September 14, 1975, she was canonized as the first American-born saint. Source: Maryland State Archives

Mount St. Mary’s founded at the foot of the mountain

In October 1808 Father John DuBois, a priest who had fled the French Revolution, began laying the foundations of Mount St. Mary’s near Emmitsburg. The university calls itself America’s second-oldest Catholic university. In 1875 its students and seminarians built a replica of the grotto at Lourdes, which was named a national shrine in 1958. Main Street’s 1785 roots and the 1863 fire
