Ladiesburg as we know it

Ladiesburg is a crossroads on Route 194 between Woodsboro and Keymar: a few streets of houses at the junction, and farms and homes on large lots along the roads out of it. It’s small enough that people ask whether anyone comes out here. We do, on the same days we’re in Woodsboro and Keymar, because it’s on the way.

The homes are a mix: older farmhouses with a mudroom that takes the weather, and newer houses on an acre with a well and a long gravel drive. Both bring grit in at the doors and mineral spots on the fixtures, and we plan the time for that. A typical first clean of a three-bedroom home runs about three hours for a team of two; after that, about an hour or two per visit, depending on the home.

We clean homes around Ladiesburg along Woodsboro Pike (MD 194).

A little history about Ladiesburg

A stop on the line to Frederick

Frederick County’s historic preservation plan records that in 1873 the Pennsylvania Railroad opened a branch from York, Pennsylvania, to Frederick. The line linked Walkersville, Woodsboro, New Midway and Ladiesburg. The 1941 Gazetteer of Maryland described Ladiesburg as a village of about 110 people, three miles northeast of Le Gore. It had a post office and Pennsylvania Railroad service, and it sat on Maryland Route 71. Ladiesburg’s mills

Business records show small mills working at Ladiesburg in the 1800s. The 1860 census of manufactures listed Lewis Cash with $600 invested in a mill. The mill had one employee and earned $800 a year from “grinding and sawing.” The 1867 Hawes Business Directory listed him at Ladiesburg, misspelled as “Lewis Cast.” Twenty years later, the 1887 state directory named George Biehl as the miller at Ladiesburg.
